Can you change my address?
The only time we can change your address is when we file your tax return, otherwise, we are not authorized to change your address.
How do I change my address?
You must change it either through your CRA my account or by contacting the CRA at 1-800-959-8281 or download the form called “Address Change Request to CRA” from our website and mail it them.
How do I change my banking information after filing my income tax return?
We cannot change your banking information after filing the income tax return. You must change it either through your CRA my account or by contacting the CRA on 1-800-959-8281
What are the consequences of claiming something and not having the proof if the CRA asks me for it?
The CRA may ask you for proof for items that you have claimed, such as donation receipts or RRSP contributions. If you do not have proof, you may have to give them back any money you received with penalties and interest. It may also trigger future audits and other consequences.
I am married but we are not filing tax returns together. What information do I need to file my income tax correctly?
If you are not filing with your spouse or common-law partner, you would still need their net income to file your return correctly. If they have claimed mutual benefits on your behalf, you would also need to be aware of that to avoid double-claiming.
What happens if I overcontribute to my RRSP?
If you overcontribute to your RRSP, you will be penalized. You must remove the overcontribution to avoid increased charges.
Does the TFSA help in my income tax return?
No, but any income you earn in TFSA is tax-free.
Do I have to file my personal tax return?
You must file your tax return for the following 3 conditions:
I. You owe money to the Government. If you owe money to the Government, then you MUST file your taxes otherwise you will be penalized.
II. The CRA says that you must file your taxes. If the CRA tells you that you must file your taxes, then it is mandatory. If you do not file them, you will be penalized.
III. If you have nil income and you want to claim certain benefits. Even if you have no income, you must file your taxes if you want to claim certain benefits you are entitled to.
If I know I owe money to the CRA for income tax, what happens if I do not file income tax? What is the law?
By law, all Canadian residents and citizens must file their income tax returns. If you owe money, the government may send you letters and/or estimate your earnings and file for you. This would increase your overall payment to the government due to penalties and interest. Benefits that you are entitled to may also be lost if you do not file.
What if I do not have all the information slips needed to file my return?
Missing information can cause issues later. If you are missing some information and we cannot retrieve it from the CRA, you should wait before proceeding with filing. Ask your employer, payer, or administrator for any slips that are required.
